Ewan McGregor auditioned to be Romeo

Ewan McGregor and Christian Bale were in the running for the role of Romeo before Leonardo DiCaprio landed the role.

Luhrmann knew DiCaprio was right for the part from the moment he saw him, saying: “When I saw Leonardo I thought, ‘God, that’s how he should look. But can he act?’”

However, Luhrmann later cast McGregor in his 2001 musical ‘Moulin Rouge!’ opposite Nicole Kidman.
