‘Guerrilla filmmaking’
Because of the unforgiving budget, George Miller opted to shoot ‘Mad Max’ via “guerrilla filmmaking”.
The director didn’t have the money to pay for permits to close roads, so George simply shut off parts of Melbourne that he wanted to film on anyway and didn’t tell the local police about it.
He also made a conscious effort to avoid using walkie-talkies when they were filming because the production’s frequency coincided with that of the authorities.
However, once the project was finally discovered, the police were surprisingly understanding of the unsanctioned road closures, and let the production continue - even shutting off more locations for them!
